Some of our Year 8 pupils from Selwood Academy are taking part in an enriching educational visit to key First World War sites across Belgium and northern France, including Lijssenthoek, Langemarck, and Tyne Cot.

So far, pupils have explored the realities of the First World War through visits to cemeteries and memorials. These experiences have supported their understanding of remembrance, sacrifice, the role of women in wartime, and the global impact of conflict. Visiting these historic sites has provided pupils with valuable opportunities to reflect on the events of the past in the very places where they occurred.

The learning journey will continue with visits to the Passchendaele Museum, In Flanders Fields Museum, the Menin Gate Last Post Ceremony, and significant Somme battlefields and memorials, including Lochnagar Crater, Thiepval Memorial, Beaumont-Hamel, High Wood, and Vimy Ridge, before the group returns to the UK.

This visit provides a powerful and memorable educational experience, helping pupils to deepen their historical understanding while developing reflection, empathy, and engagement with the past.
