At Selwood we believe Mathematics teaches an essential set of skills for all pupils. As well as ensuring a firm grounding in numeracy, mathematics promotes logical thinking, problem solving, accuracy, and the abilities to reason, analyse and handle abstract concepts.
The mathematics skills pupils learn at Selwood set the foundation for future learning as well as potential employment opportunities.
We recognise that there is a wide range of achievement in maths as well as a wide range of historical feelings about the subject. Our goal is that all children develop confidence in the basic numeracy skills and hopefully come to enjoy learning about the subject. In order to instil this solid foundation, our pupils in years 5 and 6 have six maths lessons per week. Years 7 and 8 have three maths lessons per week.
We always look forward to working with parents and family members to encourage the development of these basic maths skills, as well as reasoning and problem-solving capabilities. With this in mind, we offer sessions to explain a bit more about what learning maths looks like at Selwood and how you might be able to better support your children at home.
